Marianne Hartmann Obituary

In Loving Memory of Marianne Potocki Hartmann (1942-2023) A passionate educator, Marianne Hartmann, peacefully passed away at 80 years old on October 25, 2023. Born in the Polish enclave of Trenton, New Jersey, in 1942 to parents John and Sophie Potocki, she attended Cathedral High School. Marianne was the first in her family to go to university, earning scholarships to Trenton State College, where she achieved degrees in English and education. For 37 years, she dedicated herself to teaching at Princeton High School, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of thousands of students. Her unwavering commitment to education was acknowledged with the prestigious Princeton University Prize for Distinguished Secondary School Teaching in 1980. Her literary inclinations ranged from the works of J.D. Salinger, William Shakespeare, and Ernest Hemingway. Beyond her teaching, Marianne had a passion for travel, a love for flowers, and an appreciation of film. She delighted in celebrating birthdays with her close friends and exploring Manhattan with visits to museums and theater. She practiced karate in her moments of vigor, and in calmness, she completed the daily crossword puzzle with her family. She is survived by her four siblings, Barbara Maruca of Colorado, John Potocki, Tim Potocki of New Jersey, and Lori Potocki of Texas; as well as her son and daughter-in-law, John Hartmann and Gia Wolff; and her cherished grandchild, Cassius of New York; and an extended family of in-laws, nieces and nephews. A Memorial service celebrating Marianne is scheduled for 11:00 am on Thursday,November 2, 2023, at the Buklad-Merlino Memorial Home 2141 South Broad Street, Hamilton, NJ. Marianne will be remembered for her profound educational impact and commitment to family and friends. Her memory will endure in the hearts and minds of those she influenced as a generous mother, passionate educator, and compassionate sister.

Ms Potocki was a beautiful person in many ways . I had her as my English teacher at Princeton High School in 1966, and she gave me some positivity at a time when life was quite hard for me and my family . I will not forget her .

My family starting picking up Ms. Marianne´s newspaper and putting inside her door 16+ years ago. It was a honor and privilege to be a neighbor to such a lovely neighbor. Seeing her seating outside soaking up some sun was always an extra bonus. My God bless you during this time.

Ms. Hartmann was an unforgettable teacher! My sophomore year, as she prepared us for the vocab section of the SAT, she challenged me to yell STENTORIAN at the top of my lungs. She then out-yelled me. Needless to say, the word´s meaning was never forgotten!

I was a student of "Miss Potocki" in 1966. She is the reason I became a high school English teacher. Ron Medvin

I had Miss Potocki when she was a student teacher and really liked her. The next year I saw that we had a new teacher named Mrs. Hartmann. I was so pleased to see she was back! She was a great teacher.

Ms. Hartmann was my sophomore year English teacher (1998-1999). She was the first teacher to call me by my desired nickname and made a conscience effort to do so. She made books come alive. Her passion for literature and teaching was evident and I am so very lucky to have had her as a teacher. I am currently in my 19th year of teaching in Brooklyn and just yesterday I was speaking about my sophomore year English class to my students. I can only hope to make the same kind of lasting impression she did. May she rest in peace and her family find comfort in her memories at this time.
