Christine Hunihan Obituary

Christine Nancy Hunihan of Pawcatuck, Connecticut passed away on October 12, 2023 at the Westerly Hospital. Christine was born December 15, 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut where she lived for fifty-five years. Her parents were Jeremiah and Olga (Bigolin) Hunihan. Upon retirement she relocated to Pawcatuck to be only minutes from the ocean she always loved. For decades she annually spent weeks in Sint Maarten during the winter months.
Christine worked for the State of Connecticut for over 31 years starting her career in the Office of Governor Thomas Meskill and then to the Department of Finance and Control which became the Office of Policy and Management. She spent all of her years post Governor's Office in OPM's Budget Division. Thirty-one years flew by, the work was interesting and she was privileged to work among people who as she liked to say "always got the joke".
Christine attended St. Francis Xavier School, Notre Dame Academy and the University of Connecticut and Katharine Gibbs School. Very meaningfully she financed most of her college education by working in the Waterbury Post Office and had the greater benefit of making two lifelong friends from these summer and holiday jobs.
Christine, an only child, valued friendships and maintained friends from all life contexts, from first grade, travels and work. Tim and Tom had the greatest influence on different stages of her life.
Christine enjoyed travel to Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Egypt), China, many European countries (For her, Paris was the most special destination in Europe), Canada and many areas of the USA. National Parks and Seashore were some favored destinations. Also, New York City held a special place for the wonderful museums and most especially the dramas and musicals of Broadway. She enjoyed live performances and subscribed for decades to the Hartford Stage, Theaterworks, the Goodspeed Opera House and the Hartford Symphony. All of these venues were made better experiences because of the company of the friends who shared them with her.
Her greatest daily joys were her home, yard and most especially her pets. She loved dogs, all dogs. And, if there are no dogs in heaven, she said she is coming back.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to FIDELCO Guide Dog Foundation, 103 Vision Way, Bloomfield, CT 06002.
Arrangements are private and entrusted to the Mystic Funeral Home.

I am shocked at Chris's passing. I have been trying to reach her since last Fall. We last spoke on the phone about her stay in the hospital and nursing home. She was so frustrated with her situation. I will truly miss her for her solid mind and passion for what she believed in. Her animals were such a joy to her and were her loyal companions. She so enjoyed her move to Pawcatuck and her home. Her fondest times she said was sitting near the water. Chris, I lost a true friend and mentor.

Christine was a dear friend of my father's and attended his memorial service in 2019. We stayed in touched and had lunch when we were in CT in 2021. I spoke with her in early September to arrange a visit and was attempting to reach her on the 15th to finalize the details when I learned of her passing. I'm so sorry for the loss of her, she was a truly nice lady. I hope she and my dad are sharing stories in Heaven.

I am saddened by Chris's passing. We shared phone calls over the past few years, reminiscing about our days at Notre Dame Academy, her travels and, of course her beloved Holly. We've lost a gem.

We were childhood friends. Our Mothers worked together at Uniroyal for years. We reconnected 2009 and communicated frequently. I just sent her a text on the 10/7. I'm in shock! Can someone explain? Rest in Peace my friend and I always got the joke!
