Grady Gibbs Obituary

Panacea - Grady Lee Gibbs, Jr. was born in Hattiesburg, MS, on Dec. 17, 1951, and died on Oct. 28, in Tallahassee. Grady was a 1969 graduate of Petal High School (MS), and a Viet Nam veteran. He was a tug boat captain for over 40 years on the Mississippi River and in Venezuela, hence his nickname "The Captain."

Grady loved people, and never met a stranger. He had an infectious laugh, and always had a joke or story to share. He was an awe- some cook – his Galactic Gumbo was renowned in the area. Always up for a rousing game of Scrabble, Cribbage or Backgammon, he played for blood – just ask his family. He was an active leader in Alcoholic Anonymous, Farm Share, served as a trustee of Ochlockonee Bay United Methodist Church and was a supporter of the local animal shelter. He lived life on his own terms and left it the same way.

He is survived by the love of his life, Debbie Register, his best friends Tracey Phillips and Victor Bateman, his sisters Ann Gibbs and Guinn Plummer (Tommy), brother Walter Brewer (Eula), niece Amber Pearce, and great nephew, Landon Pearce, aunts Billie Patterson and Katherine Howington (Don), a number of cousins, and a ton of close and supportive friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Grady L. Gibbs, Sr., his mother, Rai Gibbs, and his brother, John Gibbs.

A celebration of life was held Sunday, Nov. 5 at the Sopchoppy City Park, 252 Park Avenue, Sopchoppy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Alcoholics Anonymous, 54 Ochlockonee St., Crawfordville, FL 32327 or the Wakulla County Animal Services, 1 Oak St., Crawfordville, FL 32327.

Grady is responsible for my sobriety, and as such is responsible for my life. He offered just what I needed when I needed it, and I cannot thank him enough. I hear his voice in my ears, and he lives on in my heart.

As we all know Grady made the best gumbo. One New Years at The Deck , he wasn't able to come home so he made a tape and sent it to Linda. We made gumbo from his directions. It wasn't as good as his but it was pretty close. We laughed through the whole process This world has lost a really great man. My condolences to his family.

We had only known Grady in passing for a short while, and were anticipating getting to know him better once we moved in across the street on Levy Bay Road, into the house we are building there. Grady was always friendly to us, and cheerful every time we would see each other. We were so saddened to hear of his passing. God Bless you, Grady, and your family and friends. You are all in our prayers.

Grady, and the Gibbs family were my neighbor and we all grew up together. It was a great neighborhood for children to play all up and down the street. My best memories are growing up on Holmes st in Petal MS. Prayers for Ann and Guin and his friends as you deal with your loss. Sharon Revette Mayer
