Scott Hinz Obituary

SCOTT LEE HINZ Wellman The Celebration of Life, postponed due to the pandemic, for Scott Lee Hinz will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Park Lodge, Terry Trueblood Recreation Area, 570 McCollister Blvd., Iowa City, Iowa, (brief remarks begin at 1:30 p.m.). The family respectfully requests that guests be vaccinated against COVID-19. Also, please no flowers or plants. Memorials may be made to Asbury Methodist Church Board of Trustees (grounds maintenance), P.O. Box 540, Wellman, IA 52356, or the Wellman Golf Club (grounds maintenance), P.O. Box 88, Wellman, IA 52356. Scott Lee Hinz was born June 24, 1955, in Denison, Iowa, the oldest son of Gordon and Alice "Marie" (Hawley) Hinz. He graduated from Mediapolis (Iowa) High School and Iowa State University with a degree in horticulture. He married his high school sweetheart, Mallory Moore, and they had one daughter, Caitlin. He began his professional career at Kansas Nebraska Energy in Casper, Wyo., and then worked for 25 years at the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory. Scott nurtured a love of the natural world throughout his life. He planted and cared for innumerable trees, gardens and houseplants. He loved outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, annual turkey and deer hunting, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and golfing. He and Mal enjoyed traveling in their retirement, particularly regular trips to New York City. In his spare time, he enjoyed following the Hawks and Cubs, reading and practicing meditation. Scott's most endearing quality was his kind-hearted and fun-loving nature. His laughter was infectious and more than once attending a high school reunion someone would hear his laugh and say "Scotty's here!" Scott passed away Feb. 1, 2020, after a five-year battle with leukemia. Scott continues to live in the hearts of his wife of 41 years, Mallory; daughter, Caitlin, Denver, Colo.; father, Gordon, Iowa City, Iowa; brothers, Mark (Larissa), Harlan, Iowa, and Brent (Tamara), Columbus, Ohio; nieces, Allyson, Kylee and Madelyn; and nephew, Jakob. He was preceded in death by his mother and maternal and paternal grandparents. The family would like to extend their love and gratitude to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics bone marrow transplant unit and Dr. Margarida Silverman and Gina Glass, PA-C.
