Allen Campbell, long-time pastor and community leader, died Friday November 10, 2023 at the age of 85.
He was born on November 2, 1938 in Richland Center, WI the son of Alvin and Elsie (Joitel) Campbell. He grew up in Janesville, WI and graduated from Craig High School in 1956 and attended the University of Wisconsin. He enjoyed a successful business career, married the "love of his life JJ" on June 21, 1973. Four years later, he received his call to ministry and attended United Methodist Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, IL, from which he graduated and was ordained in June 1988. Pastor Al had served Methodist churches in Farmington Hills, and Livonia, MI; Buffalo Grove, Elgin, Peotone, Rochelle, Marengo and Anna, IL. Having retired from the Methodist Church in 2007. He later joined the UCC and was called to be pastor of the Rock Falls Congregational Church in March 2009.
He was involved in each of the communities where he served. In Sterling, he served as President of the Kiwanis Club; and was on the board of the Whiteside Co Senior Center and Caring Center. He organized and served as president of the Clergy network. Pastor Al served as columnist for the Sterling Gazette for many years. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He was an avid card player especially euchre.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years "JJ"; one sister Carol Hanna; three step sons: Steve Miller, Dan (ReJeana) Miller and Jon (Connie) Miller; five grandchildren: Shannon, Katie, Corinne, Andy and Troy; and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A gathering of friends and family will take place on Saturday November 18, 2023 from 10-11 AM in Wesley United Methodist Church in Sterling, followed by the memorial service at 11 AM. Arrangements entrusted to McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
