Steven Ogden Obituary

Steven Dale Ogden

1942 ~ 2023

Steven Dale Ogden (81), our beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on November 7, 2023, due to heart and kidney complications.

Steve was born on January 13, 1942. He spent his early years in Richfield and Marysvale, Utah. He was riding horses and herding sheep out on the range at a very young age. His family later relocated to Los Angeles County, California, where he swapped his horse for a surfboard. He described his happy teenage years as "a page out of the popular Beach Movies of the 60's".

He attended Reseda High School, where he excelled in sports, particularly football. He later played running back for a year at Pierce Junior College, and then for 3 years at BYU alongside his brother John. He was passionate about football throughout his life and loved watching his sons and grandsons on the field.

Steve married Toni Dianne Fabrizio on June 3, 1966. They are the parents of 7 children, 25 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Once when asked how he wanted to be remembered, he replied, "I guess I'd like to be remembered as a good dad, a good husband, and a great grandfather." He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing games, attending sporting events, watching movies, eating out, and going on vacations to Lake Powell, the California Beach House, and - his wife's favorite - Hawaii.

Steve cherished his time spent in Argentina as a young missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and then later as a Mission Leader, alongside Toni, in the Argentina Cordoba Mission. He felt his missions were transformative. His service and the relationships forged in Argentina were very meaningful to him and brought a great deal of joy. He was fluent in Spanish up until his death. Steve also served selflessly in the Oquirrh Mountain temple presidency and as a single's ward branch president, among other religious assignments.

Steve and Toni lived in southern California with their young family, until a tragic drowning accident took the life of their toddler Amy. They then moved to Utah. As a young father he took a big risk and opened up Ogden's Carpet Outlet in Sugarhouse. The business quickly grew, due in part to his willingness to think big and his creative marketing acumen. Today there are 12 Ogden's Flooring & Design stores throughout Utah. Steve was known for featuring himself (and all of his children, willing or not, at one time or another) in tv and radio ads, talking about the latest sale. He employed hundreds of people over the years, and many spoke of his generosity and kindness.

Steve was a very genuine person, never pretending to be anyone other than himself. He was fun to be around, and didn't take himself too seriously. His grandchildren adored him. He was generous to a fault, adventurous, a quick learner, confident, and spontaneous. He loved God and tried to serve Him and His children. Steve had a huge heart. Thus it only seems fitting that eventually that giant heart gave out.

Steve was preceded in death by his daughter Amy Lynn Ogden, his brother, John Ogden, and his parents, Dale Ross and Edna Brox Ogden. He is survived by his devoted wife Toni (San Tan Valley, AZ), who worked tirelessly over the past decade to keep him healthy and here for a final quarter of play. He is also survived by his children – Chad Ogden (Christy), Lehi, UT; Trent Ogden (Tammy), Sandy, UT; Nikki Park (Michael), Gilbert, AZ; Heath Ogden (Jimena), Orem, UT; Kalli Ashby (Christopher), Mapleton, UT; and Licia (Matt, Greg), Ferndale, WA; as well as 25 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Linda Callaway (Lowell), Loomis, CA; brother Bill Ogden (Marsha), Bloomington, UT; mother-in-law, Flora Fabrizio (West Jordan, UT); and many brothers-and sisters-in-law, whom he worked with and loved.

We'll be celebrating his life at a funeral service to be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 18, at the LDS meetinghouse located at 11570 South Wasatch Blvd, Sandy, Utah. A viewing will be held at the same address from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, November 17, and on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m., prior to the funeral services. The burial will take place at Larkin Sunset Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to either the First Nations Development Institute (https://www.firstnations.org/) or the National Kidney Foundation (https://www.kidney.org/).

I first met Steve when he opened his first Utah store on Sugarhouse and quickly made a great friend. He was kind, fair and easy to love and respect.

As Steve's obituary read he wanted to be remembered for his commitment to Toni, his family and to his faith and beliefs. I will treasure our friendship and time spent together. All my thoughts and prayers are with Toni and the Ogden family. God Bless and keep you!

You do not know me but many years ago I worked at Ogdens carpet the location just north of 7200 Sourh. For a business there was a fun environment when Steve was around. It eas a pleasure to work for such a good man!
May the family be blessed and comforted at this difficult time. I have heard once that when some dear and close to you you gain angel watching over you.

I have very fond memories of this great man. Along with his tenure in the first temple presidency for Oquirrh Mountain I remember precious times we had doing ordinances together. One in particular was a Spanish endowment session where he gave this beautiful prayer in Spanish which really touched my heart. He touched many hearts. We share our condolences. With much love, Lee and Barbara Harlan

My parents were close friends with Steve's while growing up in Encino, California. I recall watching the Ogden Brothers play football at Reseda High School back in the early 60s. I am sorry our paths separated after they headed to BYU and I to UCLA. Bob Nelson

I graduated from Reseda High with Steve in 1960 and saw him several times in Salt Lake at one of our temples, and Steve readily remembered me and was so friendly. He was popular in high school but always friendly and kind to everyone. God bless his family.

I always liked Steve. It seemed that whenever I talked to him, the world slowed down a little and It felt as if the moment was about you, not him-which felt respectful and Christ like. I loved his humor and authentic humility. I suppose Steve and Ned may have a few things to talk about. Isabelle Halvorson (Doug)-(Isabelle and Ned Briner).

Although I never knew Steve personally, I was a roommate of Toni at the Y. I loved Toni almost as a sister. She was beautiful,, so I knew her good taste would be reflected in choosing Steve as her eternal companion. May your entire family be blessed with strength and comfort during this time.

I don't personally know Bro. Ogden, but I did meet him at the baptistry at the Jordan River Temple one day. I went to do baptisms, and realized while waiting for my turn that he was the Ogden carpet guy. But what I was most impressed with was how kind and carefully he baptized everyone. He made sure we were guided down and up the stairs carefully, and he did not "dunk" at all. It may sound odd, but he was so kind, and made sure that the whole experience was like how I would imagine Christ would take care of those of us being baptized. His friendly smile and gentle demeaner was obviously memorable. I have been baptized for the dead numerous times, and I don't really remember almost anyone else who baptized me over the years....except for Bro. Ogden. Prayers for peace for your family at this time.

I knew Steve (as a fan) when he played at BYU. Later I worked with him in the Oquirrh Temple. He was a warrior in his service under health challenges, but he persevered with Toni´s support. They are an incredible couple! Their families can be proud of the legacy of they lived.

Toni, I remember you from my early high school years at Union. Big rival back then. Watched Steve and his success at BYU while I was there and some of my family still in the Hanna area and the Fabrizio name still very important and so well known. I am sorry for your loss but just think how happy the angels are to have Steve home. You are in our prayers and we hope that you will feel the peace from your Father in Heaven.

At the Jordan River Temple when they started the Spanish sessions there were three of us assigned to that session Steve Ogden, Tres Tanner and Thiel Hatt. We also served in the initiatory booth. When the Oquirrh Mountain Temple opened is was Steve who set me apart. He was down to earth kind of guy with a with a pleasant sense of humor.. Thanks Steve for your positive influence on my life , and many others.
