Nancy McFadden Obituary

Nancy Wilson McFadden

June 12, 1940 - July 31, 2023

Austin, Texas - Nancy Wilson McFadden died at home in Austin, Texas, on July 31, 2023. She was a kind, classy woman who will be missed by all who knew her.

A long-time Austinite and proprietor of one of its first women-owned businesses (Second Time Around), Nancy was a fourth-generation Californian. She was born on June 12, 1940, in Arbuckle, California, to Dorothy (nee Strong) and Edwin Wilson. Nancy was the eldest of Dorothy and Ed's three children.

Nancy spent most of her school years in Sacramento. She graduated from McClatchy High School in 1958, where she served as Secretary of the Senior Class. While attending Sacramento State College, she met Dennis McFadden. They married in December 1960, and moved first to Boston, then to Bloomington, and ultimately to Austin where Dennis was a professor until he retired.

In 1974 Nancy co-founded Second Time Around, which became Austin's premiere consignment shop for women's and children's clothing. Nancy ran "STA" for 25 years.

In addition to being a business trailblazer, an active mother, and a faculty wife, Nancy enjoyed travel, movies, theater (especially musical theater), gardening, hiking, and bird-watching. She was widely renowned for her entertaining and cooking, especially during holidays and for out-of-town guests.

Nancy leaves husband of 62 years Dennis McFadden; daughter Tracie McFadden Burns and her husband Fred; son Devin McFadden and his wife Stacia; and granddaughter Katie McFadden, all living in the Austin area. Also surviving are sister Suzanne Wilson Witt (Sacramento) and her daughter Kimberly Cook Taub (Sacramento), Kim's family, numerous cousins and relatives in northern California, McFadden nieces and their families in Montana and Idaho, and many friends of all ages around the country. Nancy was predeceased by her parents and brother Will Wilson.
