Charles Gwaltney Obituary

Charles Edwin Gwaltney, 80, of Chesapeake, passed away on November 6, 2023, surrounded by loved ones in his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Thomas and Katie Belle Wrenn Gwaltney; and his son, Alan Craig Gwaltney.

Charles is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Jo Slate Gwaltney; his son, Mark Slate Gwaltney (Amanda) of Buxton, NC; his daughter, Sara Gwaltney Twiford and granddaughters Wrenn Layden and Charley Claire Twiford of Chesapeake. He is also survived by his twin brothers, Jerry L. Gwaltney (Gayle) of Penhook, VA and Gerald T. Gwaltney (Cookie) of Suffolk, VA; seven nieces and nephews; eleven great nieces and nephews and many beloved cousins and good friends.

Charles graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and started working for C&P Telephone Company in the mailroom as an interoffice mail carrier in 1963. He retired in 2001 from Verizon as the Area Manager for South Hampton Roads. Charles gave back to his community serving on various regional boards and the Board of Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center.

Charles was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends and family. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and compassion for others.

The funeral will be held on Friday, November 17 at 11:00 a.m. at New Creations United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Creations UMC or the charity of your choice.
