Vera Mitchell, 87, of Paragould, passed away Nov. 9, 2023, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House.
She was born on Oct. 23, 1936, to Winfred Dunham and Nellie Holland. Vera was of the Baptist faith and attended the First Baptist Church in Paragould for many years.
Vera loved flowers and gardening. She was recognized several times with yard of the month honors. She participated in many community clubs and events, such as Paragould Christmas Parade, Master Gardeners, Christian Women's Job Corps, womens prison ministries, Aqape House and BPW. Vera was a seamstress. In the 70s and early 80s. She made the majorette and cheerleading uniforms for Paragould junior and senior high school. She has also made many costumes for the Fine Arts Council productions and wedding dresses.
She is survived by her children, Mike Mitchell (Lauren), Cherri Smith, Joey Mitchell (Julia) and Greg Mitchell, al of Paragould; five grandchildren, Jill Mitchell Moya, Jerica Smith, Brooke Mitchell, Demi Smith and Miranda Lamb; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Dunham Sparkman and Loeta Dunham Friend; one brother-in-law, Harry Mitchell; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Joel Darius Mitchell; her parents, Winfred (Doc) Dunham and Nellie Marie Dunham; one son-in-law, Jeffrey Dean Smith; one daughter-in-law, Helen Jean Mitchell; four brothers, Charles Dunham, Donald Dunham, Junior Dunham and Wayne Dunham; and four sisters, Evelyn Dunham, Julia Dunham Deems, Alma Ruth Dunham Ward and Wilma Dunham Walker.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Paragould with Dr. Tony Cherry officiating.
The family received visitors at the church from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment followed at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Walcott under the direction of Faith Funeral Service.
Pallbearers were Michael Wheeler, Donnie Lowe, Ross Whitney, Jon Wheeler, Lee Moya and Mike Farrell. Honorary pallbearers were the Senior Ladies Class FBS, Flo and Phil Jones Hospice Staff, AMMC Home Health Providers, Dr. Jake McMillon, George Spense, Terrell Singleton, Rodney Combs, James Stidman, Nell Brewington, Travis Standley, and her BPW Sisters.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the First Baptist Church in Paragould, or the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro.
