ALAN STEPHENSON Obituary

STEPHENSON--Alan C. The lawyers and staff of Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP mourn the passing of their partner, colleague and friend, Alan C. Stephenson. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife and family. Mr. Stephenson, who joined Cravath in 1970 and became a partner in 1978, had a diverse corporate practice. He routinely represented companies in their most transformative and high-profile transactions and was widely recognized as one of the preeminent M&A practitioners of his time. In 1988, Mr. Stephenson left Cravath to join the investment banking firm of Wasserstein Perella & Co., Inc., where he was a Managing Director advising on M&A transactions. He returned to Cravath in 1992 and retired in 2009. Mr. Stephenson was a member of the External Advisory Board, Undergraduate Honors Program and the Boards of the Morehead Cain Scholarship Fund and the Parr Center for Ethics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; the Board of Trustees of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory; the New York City Bar Association; and the New York Bar State Association's Corporation Law Committee. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina, Mr. Stephenson received an A.B. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1967, where he was a Morehead Scholar and elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1970, where he was an editor of the Law Review. He will be remembered not only for his prominence as a practitioner, but equally for the humility, integrity and kindness he demonstrated as a person. He will missed greatly by all who knew him.

I grew up in Red Springs with Alan. He was an upper classman, but being from a very small high school everyone knew one another well. He was always very handsome and very smart! No one was surprised when he won a Morehead Scholarship to UNC. I appreciated learning of all Alan accomplished in his lifetime. I know his family was immensely proud of the contributions he made during his career. Having a daughter and granddaughter who both graduated from UNC, it means so much to know he supported of his alma mater.

I truly regret that I did not learn of the memorial service in time to attend. I will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers. May God provide the comfort and peace so needed at this sad time.

With love and sympathy,
Mary Paris Templeton
