Gene DiGiovanni Obituary

Gene J. DiGiovanni Sr.
Gene J. DiGiovanni Sr., age 69, entered eternal rest with his loving family by his side on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at the St. Raphael Campus of Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of Donna Pompi DiGiovanni. Gene was born in Derby on February 12, 1954, son of the late Angelo and Ann Raccio DiGiovanni. A lifelong resident of Derby, he was employed as a bricklayer/business agent for Local 1 Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen for thirty-five years. He was also instrumental in the formation and day to day operations of the family business, DiGiovanni & Sons Construction since 2003. Gene was a fifty-three-year member of the St. Sebastian Club in Ansonia, where he was currently serving as President. He proudly coached his sons in Derby Little League and Derby Pop Warner. His coaching slogan was "Who's better than Us?...Nobody!" He was a world traveler and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and many close friends. In addition to his wife Donna, he leaves to cherish his memory, sons, Gene J. DiGiovanni Jr. (Heidi) of Derby, Mathew L. DiGiovanni of Ansonia, and Nicholas J. DiGiovanni (Jillian) of Derby, a sister, Mary Ann Rockefeller (Thomas) of Seymour, grandchildren, Milania DiGiovanni of Ansonia, Luciano DiGiovanni, Angelo DiGiovanni, Mia DiGiovanni, and Nunzio DiGiovanni all of Derby, and nieces, Audra, and Samantha Rockefeller of Seymour. He was predeceased by an infant son, Gene T. DiGiovanni and a nephew, Kevin Daly. Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family and pay their respects on Friday, November 10, 2023, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Saturday, all are welcome to attend his funeral by meeting directly at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church (Our Lady Queen of the Apostles Parish), 212 Elizabeth Street in Derby for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the family plot in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery in Derby. To sign Gino's guestbook or share a memory, please visit www.spinelliricciutifh.com.

As the days and weeks pass, I thought it would get easier to celebrate your new life with Jesus Christ. Well, I was totally wrong about that Daddy! I think about you every single day and even noticed that I have the same taps and dings with my trowel hand. You know what I’m talking about. I never realized how many things we did together until I started doing them by myself now. There’s been a few times now, that I went to call you to talk or ask you something. When you didn’t pick up it hit me that all I have left are all those memories we created together. I’m am so thankful for all the things you taught me my entire life. Those experiences made me the man I am today, and for that I will be forever grateful. Not to many sons can say that their father was there coach, teacher, and best friend. I’m proud to say that you were Daddy. I miss you so much every day but I know you’re watching over me and still protecting our family. I love you a million skies!! -Gino

Gene was my best friend and neighbor starting with 2nd grade at New Irving School. We grew up together at the YMCA, in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and as football teammates and classmates at Derby High, Class of 1972. We had great times together as kids in Derby and at Gene's family cottage in Milford and our moms became close friends. I'm sorry to say we lost touch when I left Derby after high school. My deepest condolences to his family.
