"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."
Matthew11:22
Wondrus Erkins was born February 2, 1939, in Eufaula, Alabama, to Steve and Albertha Erkins. As a young boy growing up, Wondrus accepted Christ and became a member of the Rocky Mount Baptist Church in Eufaula, Alabama. He attended Britt Rosenwald Elementary School and Glenville High School in Eufaula, Alabama.
After graduating high school, Wondrus moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and united with the Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, where He served as a trustee and an usher. He also served as president of the usher board. He later united with Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, where he was an active and faithful member until his health started to deteriorate. He was also a member of Prince Hall Masons' Corinthian Lodge No. 5
On June 30, 1960, Wondrus married the love of his life Grace Erkins. Wondrus and Grace celebrated over 60 years of marriage. They were blessed with two children, Wondrus Erkins Jr., Demond E. Erkins, and one grandson, Marquis Erkins.
Wondrus was employed and retired from A.O. Smith/Tower Automotive, where he worked for 39 years. He enjoyed gardening, eating peanuts and ice cream, watching sports, and "Judge Judy."
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend departed this earth for another land. "A city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God" (Hebrews 11:10). On Tuesday Morning, June 14, 2022, Wondrus Erkins passed away at St. Mary's Hospital. After battling Parkinson's disease and other illnesses, the angel of death came, and he drifted off to be with the Lord.
Wondrus leaves to cherish his memory: his son, Demond Erkins; his grandson, Marquis Erkins; and his great-granddaughters, Tamara and Arianna Erkins. Four brothers also survive him: Steve Erkins Jr; John (Lavonia) Erkins; Moses (Vivian) Erkins of Eufaula, Alabama; James (Gloria) Erkins of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Four sisters: Julia Owens and Jessie Chisolm of Eufaula, Alabama; Vernese Latham and Sister/ Niece Lynette (James) Franklin.
Wondrus was preceded in death by his wife Grace Erkins, his mother and father, Steve, and Albertha Erkins, five sisters: Annie Thomas, Elizabeth Turner, Thelma Forte, Annie Walton, and Adell Denson; two brothers-in-law, Moses Thurman and Sam Thurman Jr. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends cherish his memory and treasure his spirit forever.
He did it his way!
