In 1967 I played basketball withMark on the Ocean Township 7th and 8th grade basketball team, as one of the 6 seventh graders to make the team. I mostly sat on the bench watchng Mark, John Holmes, Jeff Pullen Jimmie Falco and Timmy Brno burn up the court. Mark of course was the standout, a fierce competitor wbut he always had a knd word and was a perfect teamate. A wonderful young man. My deepest condolences to Mark's family and friends. DEAR SANDY, SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS!!! MARK, ALWAYS WAS HAPPY TO SEE OLD FRIENDS, WITH THAT SINCERE SMILE, AND KINDNESS. HE WAS BY FAR, THE BEST BASKETBALL PLAYER, I EVER "TRIED" TO GUARD, UNSUCCESSFULLY, TO SAY THE LEAST!!! WE "HAD" THE LAST GAME WE PLAYED AT O.T.H.S. "WON", LEADING 61-49 WITH 4 MIN. REMAINING!!! OR SO WE THOUGHT, AS MARK DECIDED IT WAS "CRUNCH TIME"!!! HE PROCEEDED TO SCORE AT WILL, AND LEAD OCEAN TO A 71-70 WIN, OVER OUR ASBURY TEAM. MARK, NEVER BRAGGED, JUST LET HIS 20 FT. Dear Sandy and all the Hlatky Family,
It is with deep sadness that my husband Tom and I, offer our heartfelt condolences to all of you.
Mark was truly a passionate young person who loved his family, the people around him and basketball. He was dedicated , talented, and successful yet he never forgot his beginnings and always gave back to his community. All who knew him, loved him. His enthusiasm was contagious. Tom and I will never forget his coaxing us out with the "kids" to ice skate on Sunset Lake!
And ,we will never forget all the thrills he provided when his leading his team to the finals in the State Basketball Championship. Afterwards, we were fortunate enough to follow his games to UPenn and Rider.
Then, many years later, he allowed his daughter to travel with us to France and we met up again.
Here is a person who made a difference in everyone's life around him, a great student,husband,and father.
Mark will remain forever in our hearts.

So sad & tragic to hear about Mark. Will always remember his high school basketball exploits during my radio days on WJLK. Those were fun times. Lost touch with him thereafter but great to learn what a great life he had and his impact on those around him. RIP Mark.

Mr. Hlatky was my basketball coach from 1989-1992, he was always very passionate about the game and the success of his students. May he rest peacefully!

So sad to hear about Mark, always called me cuz, because Sandy and I are cousins. Always upbeat , fun, just the nicest guy you can ever know.Sandy, girls, Aunt Marie, you couldn´t of had a better man in your life.

My most sincere condolences to Sandy, Pamela and Christina. My father coached girls basketball with Mark at APHS and some of my fondest memories as a child were in the stands watching the Lady Blue Bishops and Mr. Hlatky´s coaching intensity. His personality was larger than life.
Mark was the first person to our house the day my dad died. He sat with us for hours reminiscing and sharing stories. He also made it abundantly clear that the joys of his life were his girls and grandchildren.
I pray that the memories will bring you comfort in the days and months to come.

My condolences to the entire Hlatky family. Every time I saw Mark, he had that same smile on his face. From the first time I met him as he was parking cars at the Loch Arbour beach club to seeing him last summer at the Allenhurst Beach Club. So sorry to hear of his loss.

My condolences to the Hlatky and DeSarno families. Mark was an amazing person. From one Wanamassa lifer to another R.I.P buddy.

Growing up on Birch Ave in Wanamassa three doors away from the Hlatky's, Mark was my earliest and oldest childhood friends. So many memories of our days spent at Park Blvd, bodysurfing in Point Pleasant, and being dragged off to see the latest scary movie that Mark had to see even though we were forbidden from doing because Mark wouldn't sleep for days afterwards. He was one of the most loyal, important friends of my life. Sincere condolences to Sandy and family.

Our hearts are filled with happy memories of a wonderful friend. Fun times golfing, going to the racetrack, vacationing with Don Lebkes, and picking out our favorite restaurants were all so much better because we could do them together. The lobster buffets, Chef Vola, roulette in Atlantic City, pinochle games, picking some winners and a few losers, working together in Asbury Parkso many memories. Nothing was more special to Mark than sharing his love for his family. He was filled with joy talking about their activities and accomplishments. A great friend, a wonderful role model, a true family man. He will live forever in our hearts.

Being 4 years younger, I was in school with younger siblings Bruce and Peaches, not Mark. But he always treated me as a friend of the family and almost always a grin and handshake.

In August of 2021 and February of 2022, the shared personal private messages to and responses from Mark demonstrated his Courage and Strength as he faced the challenge before him. My heartfelt condolences to Marks' wife, Sandy and his daughters, Pam and Chris. I worked with Mark in Asbury for over 20 years and my husband Bill was a coaching colleague. We kept in touch on social media and I will miss that very much. Mark was so much a one-of-a-kind guy. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Peace and prayers for a soft healing.
