Mark Hlatky Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 12 to Apr. 13, 2022.
Mark Andreas Hlatky (Ocean Township), 68, passed away on April 8, 2022 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Mark was born on May 7, 1953 and grew up in Ocean Township. An athlete at a young age, Mark always spoke fondly of his Little League days, especially playing his favorite position, catcher. But as most people reading this already know, Mark's true passion was basketball. He had great success playing for the Ocean Township Spartans, leading his team to a state championship title in 1971. He is still the men's all-time leading scorer, a hall of fame inductee, and his number, 15 (which his grandchildren now proudly wear), is retired by the school. He accepted an offer to play basketball for the University of Pennsylvania, but ultimately ended up graduating from Rider University with a degree in education.

He spent his entire career teaching at Asbury Park High School. The highlights of those years were the times he spent coaching, first as the head coach for the Lady Blue Bishops (whom he coached to a state championship victory in 1984) and then later as an assistant coach for the boys' team (and two more state championships).

Anyone who knew Mark, though, knew that "his girls" were everything to him. He began dating the love of his life, Sandy (n?e DeSarno) in 1971, when they were just 18 and 16 years old, and they married in December 1980. They raised two daughters, Pamela and Christina, in Ocean Township. Mark exemplified all the qualities of a "girl dad" before the term existed, never missing a game or performance, and equally proud to watch his girls dance or cheer as he was to see them follow in his footsteps on the basketball court. Mark's pride in his family only grew as his daughters married their high school sweethearts and gave them five grandchildren. There are golf balls in ponds all over Monmouth County which bear the names Jack, Reegan, Will, Lucas and Julia. He only played with these special, personalized balls.

Mark loved to play golf at the Monmouth County courses, spend time at the beach, take family vacations to Walt Disney World and later, road trips with Sandy, coach his daughters' sports teams, take freezing cold dips in the Allenhurst Beach Club saltwater pool, listen to outdoor concerts in Pier Village, spend time at the racetrack, do his crosswords and play solitaire on the computer. He also loved to do absolutely anything with his grandkids. Whether it was letting them fall asleep on his chest as babies, watching them play sports (no matter the weather), days at Jenkinson's Boardwalk, sleepovers at Nana and Pop Pop's, nights at the Italian American festival and days in the pool and on the beach, Pop Pop never missed a chance to have fun with his family. He was simply, the best.

Mark is predeceased by his father-in-law Anthony DeSarno, mother Rose, brother Ronald and sisters Leslie and Amy. He is survived by his wife Sandy, daughters and sons-in-law Pamela and Ted Lacey (Rumson, NJ) and Christina and Richard Ragucci (Sykesville, MD), grandchildren Jack, Reegan and Will Lacey and Lucas and Julia Ragucci, mother-in-law Marie DeSarno, brother-in-law Anthony DeSarno (Kathy), brothers Bill and Bruce and sister Beth Nowak.

Internment will be private, but the family will host a celebration of his life at Deal Golf and Country Club, 1 Golf Lane, Deal, NJ on Wednesday, April 13th from 5-8pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mark's name to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

In 1967 I played basketball withMark on the Ocean Township 7th and 8th grade basketball team, as one of the 6 seventh graders to make the team. I mostly sat on the bench watchng Mark, John Holmes, Jeff Pullen Jimmie Falco and Timmy Brno burn up the court. Mark of course was the standout, a fierce competitor wbut he always had a knd word and was a perfect teamate. A wonderful young man. My deepest condolences to Mark's family and friends. DEAR SANDY, SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS!!! MARK, ALWAYS WAS HAPPY TO SEE OLD FRIENDS, WITH THAT SINCERE SMILE, AND KINDNESS. HE WAS BY FAR, THE BEST BASKETBALL PLAYER, I EVER "TRIED" TO GUARD, UNSUCCESSFULLY, TO SAY THE LEAST!!! WE "HAD" THE LAST GAME WE PLAYED AT O.T.H.S. "WON", LEADING 61-49 WITH 4 MIN. REMAINING!!! OR SO WE THOUGHT, AS MARK DECIDED IT WAS "CRUNCH TIME"!!! HE PROCEEDED TO SCORE AT WILL, AND LEAD OCEAN TO A 71-70 WIN, OVER OUR ASBURY TEAM. MARK, NEVER BRAGGED, JUST LET HIS 20 FT. JUMPER, DO HIS TALKING!!! ONE OF THE "BEST" HUMAN BEINGS, I'VE EVER HAD THE "PRIVILEGE" TO CALL "MY FRIEND"!!!! RIP MY FRIEND, I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU, AS A RIVAL, OR A FRIEND!!!! LOVE, RICKY BINACO

Dear Sandy and all the Hlatky Family,
It is with deep sadness that my husband Tom and I, offer our heartfelt condolences to all of you.
Mark was truly a passionate young person who loved his family, the people around him and basketball. He was dedicated , talented, and successful yet he never forgot his beginnings and always gave back to his community. All who knew him, loved him. His enthusiasm was contagious. Tom and I will never forget his coaxing us out with the "kids" to ice skate on Sunset Lake!
And ,we will never forget all the thrills he provided when his leading his team to the finals in the State Basketball Championship. Afterwards, we were fortunate enough to follow his games to UPenn and Rider.
Then, many years later, he allowed his daughter to travel with us to France and we met up again.
Here is a person who made a difference in everyone's life around him, a great student, husband, and father.
Mark will remain forever in our hearts.

My most sincere condolences to Sandy, Pamela and Christina. My father coached girls basketball with Mark at APHS and some of my fondest memories as a child were in the stands watching the Lady Blue Bishops and Mr. Hlatky´s coaching intensity. His personality was larger than life.
Mark was the first person to our house the day my dad died. He sat with us for hours reminiscing and sharing stories. He also made it abundantly clear that the joys of his life were his girls and grandchildren.
I pray that the memories will bring you comfort in the days and months to come.
RIP "Mr. Wacky". You will be missed.

Growing up on Birch Ave in Wanamassa three doors away from the Hlatky's, Mark was my earliest and oldest childhood friends. So many memories of our days spent at Park Blvd, bodysurfing in Point Pleasant, and being dragged off to see the latest scary movie that Mark had to see even though we were forbidden from doing because Mark wouldn't sleep for days afterwards. He was one of the most loyal, important friends of my life. Sincere condolences to Sandy and family.

Our hearts are filled with happy memories of a wonderful friend. Fun times golfing, going to the racetrack, vacationing with Don Lebkes, and picking out our favorite restaurants were all so much better because we could do them together. The lobster buffets, Chef Vola, roulette in Atlantic City, pinochle games, picking some winners and a few losers, working together in Asbury Parkso many memories. Nothing was more special to Mark than sharing his love for his family. He was filled with joy talking about their activities and accomplishments. A great friend, a wonderful role model, a true family man. He will live forever in our hearts.
