THOMAS COWELL Obituary

May 10, 1942 - November 2, 2023 Dear Fellow Los Angelenos,
Thank you for taking a moment to join us in honoring the loving memory of Physician Thomas Putnam Cowell, a tireless servant to his craft for healing the sick in our community for 36 years as pathologist for Marina Mercy and Torrance Memorial hospitals. Over his exemplary career, he used his God given talents to help heal approximately 500,000 patients.
In the late 1950's, his excellence in academics at Ventura High School earned young Thomas a spot in a special program for the intelligently gifted, and his natural athletic abilities earned him a spot on the varsity golf team; a difficult game which he made look easy to play, including at the college level. In his third year at UC Berkeley, he was accepted by the University of San Francisco Medical School to get his promising career started early. While there and before completing his residency, Thomas took a year-long research sabbatical to work with a private group in Oxford England seeking break through discoveries in cancer research.
When out of the hospital, you could either find Dr. Cowell attending Rolling Hills Covenant Church or scuba diving the exotic oceans of the world taking photographs of marine wildlife, some of which were published in Ocean's Realm and National Geographic magazines.
Dr. Cowell died of natural causes at the age of 81 and is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Achara, his sister-in-law Amara, his sister Katherine Collins, his two nephews Mark and Whitney Collins and their families.
He is preceded in death by his loving and cared for parents, Adeline Mary Putnam Cowell and James Leonard Cowell; his brother, war veteran James William Cowell; and his great ancestors, Thomas Rodgers of the Mayflower and General Israel Putnam of the Revolutionary War.
His body will be interred at Conejo Mountain Cemetery on November 22, 2023.
