HORACE DUFFY SR
October 7, 1931 - May 27, 2022
Horace John Duffy, Sr. rose to glory in the early morning hours of Friday, May 27, 2022. He was born on October 7, 1931, in Carencro, Louisiana.
On October 21, 1950, Horace J. Duffy, Sr. and Priscilla Melancon Duffy united in marriage at Assumption Catholic Church in Carencro, Louisiana. In this same church, many years before, the couple shared the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion, First Penance, and Confirmation. In 1956, Priscilla and Horace moved to Barrett Station, Texas where they joined St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church.
Horace—whom his grandkids and great-grand kids affectionately called Pop—lived a life of service to his Church, his family and community. Because he was deprived of education early in life due to discrimination and poverty, Pop stressed the importance of education in his children and grandchildren. He put love and care into everything he did for his family and, most of all, giving each of his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids the exact amount of love, encouragement, and a gentle push when it was most needed. Horace and Priscilla's Sunday dinners were a weekly family reunion, beginning with amazing food and ending with praying the rosary.
Horace worked at Rohm and Haas Company in Deer Park, Texas for over 35 years. He was a dedicated member of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Barrett Station and served that community in multiple ways. Until the very end, he continuously imparted words of wisdom to his family and others and consistently put a smile on their faces. He never met a person he didn't like; he was a friend to everyone he met, and many sought his wise counsel.
The Duffy's instilled Catholic values in their children, emphasizing the power of prayer and the importance of education. They assured their children that humility was never a sign of weakness and that God's will was the best plan for their lives. That strong Christian foundation enabled Harry, the seventh Duffy child, to pursue and achieve the priesthood.
Horace leaves to mourn him his children: Christine Duffy Louis (Walter), Horace Duffy, Jr. (Jackie), Melina Duffy David (Elyard), Dennis Duffy (Amanda), Eleita Duffy LaChapelle, Deborah Duffy Francis (Raani), Robert Duffy (Mychael "Tam"), and Patricia Washington; twenty-five grandchildren, and twenty-five great-grandchildren. He leaves behind three sisters: Hermie Jones, Melta Gordon (Lee), Doris Boutte (Edmund); two brothers: Leroy Duffy (Marie) and Tony Duffy (Bennie); three sisters-in-law Evedell Melancon, Jane Melancon, and Margie Duffy; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 70 years, Priscilla Melancon "Prose" Duffy, his parents, Claude and Eleita Alexander Duffy, brother Milton Duffy, sisters in-laws Evelyn Bonnet and Eva Dell Roy, brothers in-laws, Ashton Melancon, Joseph Melancon, Raoul Melancon Jr., and Sidney Jones, Sr., his children, Ruth Duffy, Ernest Duffy, Rev. Harry Lee Duffy, SSJ, and grandchildren, Anthony Duffy and Dennis Patrick Duffy.
Services will be held on Friday, June 3, 2022. Visitation will start at 9:00 a.m., rosary at 10:00 a.m. and the funeral at 11:00 a.m. at St Martin de Porres Catholic Church, 12606 Crosby-Lynchburg Rd., Barrett Station, Texas.
