Michael Hayter Obituary

Michael Meade Hayter

June 27, 1959 - October 25, 2023

Michael Meade Hayter, 64, of Ashland, VA passed unexpectedly on October 25, 2023, at VCU Medical Center.

Born June 27, 1959, in Abingdon, VA, he was the son of the late Ned and Jennie Hayter.

How do you articulate the life and accomplishments of such a special man, known to many as the kindest and most joyful soul they've ever known? Michael had a gift of leaving those he spoke to feeling a bit brighter. A faithful child of God, patient teacher, thoughtful friend, beloved husband, father and grandfather, Michael meant much to many.

Michael grew up in Meadowview, VA and graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 1977. He went to Pharmacy school at VCU-MCV, where he met his wife of almost 40 years, Susan. After the birth of their second child, they returned to Michael's hometown of Meadowview where they lived amongst family and friends for 32 years before moving to Ashland to be closer to their granddaughters. A Pharmacist by trade, Michael lived his life in service to his patients and community.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Susan Hayter, of Ashland, VA; his son, Karl Hayter, his wife Joanna, and their two daughters, Fiona and Olivia, of Richmond, VA; and his daughter, Jess Hayter of Charlottesville, Va. His children excelled in making him proud and his granddaughters were the light of his life.

Celebration of life services are planned for 11 a.m. on November 11, 2023, at Shady Grove United Methodist Church - Short Pump, 4825 Pouncey Tract Road, Glen Allen, VA, 23059, and 2 p.m. on November 25, 2023, at Emory United Methodist Church, 30450 Armbrister Drive, Emory, VA, 24327.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Emory United Methodist Church or Shady Grove United Methodist Church. Please consider being a Red Cross blood and platelet donor to help other patients like Michael.

May your faith and your memories help sustain you during your time of grief. I remember your loved one since the first grade. His passing gives me time to reflect on memories of a very small town.
