Brenda Coleman Obituary

Coleman, Brenda Smith

November 21, 1948 - November 3, 2023

MAYODAN - Brenda Lou Smith Coleman, 74, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, November 3, 2023 at her home.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at Beaver Island Baptist Church with Reverend Bobby Billings officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 12 noon on Sunday at the church and all other times at the home.

Brenda was born in Rockingham County on November 21, 1948 where the peaches grew on Mayodan Mountain. On November 28, 1968, she married the love of her life, Junior Coleman at Beaver Island Baptist Church. At the end of the dirt road is where they raised their four children. She poured the word of the Lord into their hearts with the way she lived her life every day. Then as her family grew, she would pour into her children's spouses, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. She had a jubilant song in her heart that anyone in her presence could hear. Brenda loved her Lord and served Him for 75 years at Beaver Island Baptist Church in numerous roles. Her motto was, wherever the Lord needed her she would go. She especially enjoyed playing the organ and singing in the choir.

In 1970, Brenda graduated from Rockingham Community College as a Registered Nurse and she took The Florence Nightingale Pledge. Brenda's career allowed her to continue to serve her Lord in many situations. She started her medical career as an EMT, and then transitioned to a Labor and Delivery Nurse and later serving as a school nurse. Brenda was a Public Health Nurse for 25 years, serving Rockingham County as a Diabetes Educator, SIDS Educator, Emergency/Disaster Shelter Coordinator and BLS Instructor. She trained CNA's and was a Chaplain for Annie Penn Hospital. Brenda attended Duke's Divinity School where she completed the Parish Nursing Program. She served 13 years in her role as a Parish Nurse. Her medical knowledge, quick thinking and people skills put everyone at ease in emergency situations. Brenda also obtained her auctioneer license, which was very entertaining at family reunions.

The Lord planned everything perfectly, as Brenda was born in November, married in November, celebrated Thanksgiving (she always counted her blessings), and now has her Heavenly Homecoming in November. She will forever be celebrated by her family in November.

"Her master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' Matthew 25:21

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Smith and Ethel Richardson Smith; brother, Bud Smith and brother-in-law, Morgan Barrow.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 55 years, Joseph Raymond Coleman, Jr.; daughter, Caroline Coleman Via (Gerald) and grandchildren, Adam Via and Carson Via (Jocelynn) and great-granddaughter, Rory Via; son, Joseph Raymond Coleman, III (Susan) and grandchildren, Kennedy and Kole Coleman; son, Virgil Hunter Coleman (Anna) and grandchildren, Creed and Rhett; daughter, Joanna Coleman Mullins (Matt) and grandchildren, Haven and Jacob; siblings, Joan Barrow and Steve Smith (Willodae) and sister-in-law, Janice Smith and many special nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beaver Island Baptist Church, 3111 Ayersville Road, Mayodan, NC 27027.

We were so sorry to learn of Brenda's passing. Much love to Junior and his family during this difficult time. I wish Bud and I could come but health reasons prevent this. Prayers for peace and comfort.

Our thoughts and prayers for all of Brenda's family. After high school, we took different paths, but she was a joy to know then - a friend to many, and always had a smile to share with everyone. We know she will be missed by all who knew and loved her. The good news - we will meet her again on that great Homecoming Day.

I just heard about Brenda going to meet Jesus today. The world will have an empty place that no one else can fill. Many people will be with her in heaven that learned about Him because of her heart felt need to make sure they had eternal life. I will be thinking about the Junior and the rest of the family.
