Winifred Johnson Obituary

Winifred Catherine (nee Varga) Johnson, 98, of Rocky River passed away peacefully on Nov. 12, 2023. The daughter of Louis and Elizabeth (nee Healey) Varga, Win was born in Cleveland on January 19, 1925. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Johnson and a daughter, Terese Ann Johnson (Ted Higginbotham). Win is survived by Christopher Johnson (Beatrice), Gregory Johnson (Susan), Pamela (Daniel), Mark Johnson and Philip Johnson. The lifetime Cleveland resident was the loving sister of the late John and William Varga. She earned a diploma from John Marshall High School and friendships forged during those school years remained strong throughout her life. Win married Don, her childhood sweetheart, in 1947, and they celebrated their 73rd anniversary in 2020. In addition to raising six children, Win treasured her seven grandchildren (Cameron, Justin, Margot, Michelle, Sara, Tim and Veronica) and three great-grandchildren (Wyatt, Quinn, Winn). Win was a long-time parishioner at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Rocky River. During her many decades in Rocky River, Win forged many enduring friendships. She enjoyed a lifetime of reading that ranged from the Great Books to current literature. Later in life Win and Don traveled to such destinations as France, Spain, Iran, Mexico and Hawaii. The couple also made frequent trips to visit with their children and grandchildren around the country. A private family service will be held at McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home in Westlake. The family extends its appreciation to all of the staff at The Normandy, The Welsh Home in Rocky River and Cypress Hospice.
