Roger Spradlin Obituary

ROGER LEE SPRADLIN

February 7, 1955 November 5, 2023

Funeral services will be held at Valley Baptist Church (4800 Fruitvale Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93308) on Saturday morning, November 11, 2023, at 10:30 am. Pastor Andrew Spradlin will officiate, and interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park (3700 River Blvd., Bakersfield, CA 93305), where Pastor Matthew Spradlin will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Pastor Matthew Spradlin, Pastor Andrew Spradlin, Pastor Brian Busby, Malachi Spradlin, Micah Spradlin, and Titus Spradlin. Honorary pallbearers will be Pastor Phil Neighbors, Lonnie Stilwell, Caleb Chicca, and Shane Wardell.

Roger Lee Spradlin was born in Elk City, Oklahoma, on February 7, 1955, to Donald and Elsie Spradlin. He went home to be with the Lord on November 5, 2023, with his family by his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Elsie Spradlin; daughter, Charity Renee; father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Jean East.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Ginger Spradlin; son and daughter-in-law, Pastor Matthew and Leanne Spradlin; son and daughter-in-law, Pastor Andrew and Kelsey Spradlin; daughter and son-in-law, Faith and Pastor Brian Busby; grandchildren, Charity Spradlin, Malachi Spradlin, Micah Spradlin, Lydia Spradlin, Evangeline Spradlin, Zoe Busby, Elizabeth Spradlin, Abigail Busby, Mercy Spradlin, and Titus Spradlin; sister, LaDonna Spencer; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Pastor James and Carol Trammell, David and Paula East, Christopher and Donna Chicca, Mel and Jacqueline East, and Brad and Kerri East; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Roger grew up working with his father on the family farm in Granite, Oklahoma. In the summer of 1972 at the age of 17, he attended a summer youth camp at Falls Creek, Oklahoma where he rededicated his life to Christ. Within the next year, he made the decision to go into full-time ministry. In 1974, he became the Youth Minister for Canadian Heights Baptist Church in Yukon, Oklahoma, where he would meet his future wife while she was visiting family in Oklahoma. Roger and Ginger would marry on August 24, 1976. Roger graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1977. In 1978, Roger replanted Panama Baptist Church (now Daybreak Baptist Church) in Bakersfield, California. In 1980, he moved to Texas and pastored at First Baptist Church Abbott and attended Criswell College, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies. In 1989, Criswell College presented Roger with an Honorary Doctorate. After graduating, Roger became the Pastor of First Baptist Church Oildale in August 1983. In December of 1985, Roger, along with his childhood friend, Pastor Phil Neighbors, and a college friend, Pastor Mike Miller, merged two churches, and Valley Baptist Church was formed. In 2002, Roger earned his Doctorate of Ministry from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Under Pastor Roger's leadership, Valley Baptist Church grew from a membership of 365 to a current membership of over 7,500, and Valley Baptist Church has helped start over 20 Baptist churches around the world. Roger served Valley Baptist Church for 40 years as Co-Senior Pastor alongside Pastor Phil Neighbors. Roger's ministry was molded in 1984 through losing his oldest daughter, Charity, in a tragic accident when she was 6. He often shared that experience helped him become a better Pastor for his flock.

Roger served in numerous positions in the Southern Baptist Convention. In California, he served as the President of the California Southern Baptist Convention and the Chairman of the Executive Board. He also served 10 years on the Board of Trustees at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky (1992-2002), including two years as Chairman (1999-2001). He was a member of the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message Revision Committee and the Great Commission Resurgence Task Force, and he served 10 years on the Southern Baptist Convention's Executive Committee (2005-2015), including two years as Chairman (2010-2012). Roger also served in many other positions of denominational service.

Following the death of his daughter Charity, Valley Baptist Church started a daily radio program where Pastor Roger's sermons were broadcast. The name of this program was called Charity Ministries (1986-2006) in remembrance of his daughter. In 2006, Today's Walk Television & Radio Ministry was created where his sermons would be broadcast, reaching the lost throughout the world. Roger committed his life to teaching the Bible through expository preaching.

Some of Roger's favorite pastimes were his trips back to the family farm, watching Oklahoma Sooners football with his family, and taking care of his award-winning koi. Roger found joy in spending cherished moments with his grandkids, creating lasting memories filled with love and laughter. Roger leaves an indelible mark embodying the values of service, love, and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ that continues to inspire our church family.

But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

To quote Roger, Sometimes our faith is expressed in the victory of mounting up with wings as eagles as we soar above the circumstances of life. At other times, our faith and circumstances energize us to run and not be weary. God is teaching me the quiet victory of a life of faith that, at other times, manifests itself in a resilient endurance that simply will not faint.

Roger's faith endured and did not faint. He finished well.

In lieu of flowers, Roger's desire was for donations to be given to send students to camp. Donations can be sent to Valley Baptist Church, 4800 Fruitvale Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93308.

It is hard to believe that almost a year has past. Pastor Roger is still with us through the preaching and teaching of his sons Matt and Andrew and son-in-law Brian. They are continuing his legacy through their inspired words from our Lord by teaching us through scripture as their dad did. You will be forever in my heart.

Words fail me in expressing my feelings toward Roger and Ginger. One memory, among many, is when he officiated Trudy´s funeral. I told him not to wear a tie as he and Ginger were family, his first words to the congregation? I´ve never NOT worn a tie doing a funeral! Got quite the laugh and I loved it and him. Peace and blessings to Ginger and family.

Pastor Roger was and always will be special. To us one of a kind. Gods blessing to this troubled old world. Know that we constantly pray for God's healing for Ginger and the family and His continued blessing for them. We are merely pilgrims here and look to the time we will reunite with those who have gone on before. All in God's own time.

My deepest condolences.
I joined Valley Baptist due to Pastor Spradlin's message in 2009 and became a member till 2018 when I relocated to Las Vegas. He was the most amazing Pastor, I always felt each message was just for me every Sunday.
He had a way about him to deliver to u just what u needed when he gave his sermon.
May he rest in peace.
Heaven has gained an angel Worthy of an amazing seat next to the thrown of God.

Pastor Roger changed my walk with Jesus , I will cherish the notes from many years of his teachings and application over the years. I hold onto many many sermons on lose as he lost his beautiful baby girl many years ago, and I lost my baby girl, although an adult when she left us, his teachings on faith through trials are my go too on the hard hard days of grief. I´m so thankful to have your many teaching notes to have for life, and to pass down to my grandchildren one day. Thank You for being such a beautiful, real life servant for Jesus Pastor!! I know your so so happy reunited with your baby girl now.

Some preachers leave a lasting impression long after they have passed over to eternity with Jesus. Charles Spurgeon, Billy Sunday, Billy Graham, and Roger Spradlin among them. His preaching was clear and comprehensive; his life, and that of his wife and children, were fine examples of a committed, faith-filled life. I don´t think there is anyone who knew him who isn´t grieving the loss. But we can praise God he is with Jesus and his faith is by sight now. And that he left us with Andrew and Matthew and Brian. All fine preachers in their own right. Nobody will ever be Pastor Roger. But we come mighty close with the Pastors at Valley Baptist. My sincere sympathy to all of his family and to Pastor Phil, his friend, and a legend himself.

My heart aches for the loss that Pastor Rogers family is suffering through at this time. They were all so blessed to share a small amount of time on this earth with such a great man if God. I am so glad that they all know that they will someday spend the rest of eternity with Roger and the Lord that he was such a good and faithful servant of.

Roger was the best Pastor you could ever ask for, he was such a blessing to the church and the community. Even though my wife and I moved to Oregon and to Tennessee we watched him regularly on the internet, we considered him our Pastor no matter where we were. The whole world will assume a lose but God will gain a blessed child. At last he will be with his daughter.
