Charles Bumppo Gregory

November 14, 1937 - July 24, 2025

Charles Bumppo Gregory passed away peacefully at Matthew House in Auburn on July 24, 2025.

Bumppo was born November 14, 1937, in Tupper Lake, NY to Elroy and Lillian Domser Gregory. He graduated from Port Byron High School in 1955 and continued on to study Education and English at Auburn Community College and SUNY Oswego.

After finishing his studies, he taught English in several area schools before joining the Army near the end of the Vietnam War.

Bumppo was a voracious reader and writer. His diverse and sweeping collection of books were his most prized procession.

He would write notes, lyrics, and poems on any spare scrap of paper he found. He also loved to ponder big questions and discuss and debate philosophy, politics, and current events. No matter how complex the question, his opinions were absolute and steadfast. His vast knowledge and quick wit will be missed by all those who knew him.

Bumppo was well-traveled and well-practiced in several different trades. Over the course of his lifetime, he collected as many addresses as careers. He spent much of his time in Oregon exploring the Pacific Northwest. Throughout his many travels, he accumulated numerous lifelong friends that became like family. In his later years, he chose to return to his hometown of Port Byron where he was a fixture at the American Legion, the Port Byron Library, and the Historical Society.

He is predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Carol Gregory Roberts and Linda Gregory Marshall. He is survived by his sister, Margaret Gregory of Orchard Park, his brother-in-law Herb Marshall, his many nieces and nephews, as well as an abundance of friends.
