Passed away peacefully at home in Manapouri on Saturday, April 11, 2020, surrounded by his loved ones. Dearly loved soulmate and husband of Shirley, and beloved father and father-in-law of Martin and Terry Ann McIntyre Smith, and Wendy Walker. Treasured grandad of Nina Smith. Loved brother and brother-in-law of Margaret and Robert Mossop, Gary and Carol, Alister* and Margaret, Murray* and Glennis, and Lindsay Read, and uncle of all his nieces and nephews. Loved poppa of his God-daughter Carla and little friend Cedar. A private burial was held and a celebration service to honour Russell will be held later.

Dear Shirley,
we feel so honoured to be part of your amazing family. The moment I've asked you two to be Carla's god- and grandparents was one of the best decisions in my life. All the love and care we got from Russell and you, we can't be grateful enough. You are our family here, so far from home.
Carla called Russel her Poppa and you are Nanna. His loving nature, all the cuddles, smiles, fixing things, prayers, spoiling her, playing games and encouraging us in our life will never be forgotten. We will deeply miss him and thinking of you and the rest of your family in this sad time. He will live on in our hearts forever.
