On behalf of the Otago and Southland Brass Bands Association, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to John's family.
John was one of those bands people that you could always approach for a conversation and a darn good laugh. He will be sadly missed not only on the OSBBA Contest stage but also in our wider banding community around the country.
Rest in peace Bathy.

John was one of the great characters of banding. I enjoyed catching up with him over the years. He was a great team man and added much to the fabric of the Invercargill Garrison Band. Sincere condolences to John's family and Invercargill Band members.

John was a unique person prepared to give many things "a go". As an adult he learned to play the trombone with The Invercargill Garrison junior band until he could play well enough to join the senior band where he became a stalwart for many years. John always had a story or joke to tell when intense rehearsals needed a bit of "lightening up". If I am not mistaken he also took up bike racing at a mature age. Nor was he afraid to start a business or two all of which became well known. He will be greatly missed by many. Condolences to his family all of whom he was very proud.
