To sue and your family. So pleased I got the chance to see you both and have a good catch-up at Tuatapere in 2020. To say It was a shock to hear of Ians passing would be minimising it. A awesome man/cousin gone far too soon. Di xx

Ian was one of my teachers at Southland Boys High in the 1980s. A person who certainly got respect from those who knew him. Very sorry to hear of his passing.

Sue, and family
We are very sorry to hear of Ian's passing.
Ian was well liked by all the staff at Insall Industries where he worked for a time. He always had a great sense of humour and was fun to be around.
We valued his friendship and enjoyed his company over the years.
Our thoughts are with you all at this sad time.

I was surprised and saddened to hear of Ian´s passing, Sue and family. May the Lord comfort you all at this time.
I enjoyed teaching with Ian at SBHS from 1978 until 2003 and my three sons had him as their principal. I was especially appreciative of his leadership as the DP and then as rector from 2000 onwards. As others have noted, he was firm, if not a little scary, but fair and the boys knew that Ian understood where they were coming from. And after hearing some of his experiences as a teenage schoolboy, we knew where that understanding and compassion came from as well.
His servant leadership approach placed value on the contributions of others. I particularly appreciated the support and endorsement he gave to the Whole School Approach to Reading which was one of a number of initiatives under his leadership that resulted in us receiving a national award, but more importantly changed the culture of the school and the attitude of the boys to reading.
For me the other focus of significance was on his encouraging the young men to be Renaissance men - as comfortable with the arts and culture as they were with sport, and to be young men of character. Honesty, responsibility, respect, compassion and integrity were values to be understood and lived by. Holding these standards up as values that both staff and students were to live by made classroom management suddenly easier.
I´m grateful for having had Ian as a colleague - someone I could talk to and confide in, and as a boss. I thank God for you, Ian. Rest in His peace.

Sue and Family
We were deeply shocked to hear of Ian's passing. We remember many wonderful and funny times with him. Bruce and he and John at Redcliff for a boys weekend and also a beer of two, putting the world to rights. Ian had a wicked sense of humour , told things as they were. He was passionate about education and his contribution will be sadly missed. Best regards and you are in our thoughts. Bruce and Judith and Anderson and Jeremy and Nicholas

Sad to hear of Mr Baldwin's passing. Between 1975-79 he taught me Social Studies, Geography and was my Form Teacher in my last year at SBHS.
What I appreciate most about him was that he tried to engage with the young men in his care and inspire us to be more responsible and better people. Rest in Peace Ian.

To Sue and the whole Baldwin clan go my sincere condolences. I was fortunate to teach with him at Cargill for a number of years and again under his leadership at SBHS. It is often said in education that the best teachers are promoted out of the classroom into management. How true in the case of Baldy. He was an amazing teacher but equally a brilliant Rector inspiring the best out of the boys lucky enough to come under his influence. RIP Ian

Whenever I think of Southland and Education, immediately Ian comes to the fore. The Southland Way- Telling it as it is, without sugar coating! His deep dedication, commitment and mantle of responsibility of care for Southland Boys, striving for individual wellbeing and strength of educational development for all. A passionate and deep commitment of care-wrapped in a coating of straight shooting! An acknowledgment to 'The Southland Touch' of making things happen for the betterment of one's community.
Beloved Baldy- you achieved much, rest easy.
in appreciation and acknowledgment -Kathryn Palmer

I worked with Baldy for 3 or 4 years after I returned to teach there after having been there as a student. Ian was in my department and after I left in 1978 he was promoted to HOD Social Sciences to replace me.
He was a good teacher and supporter for me as HOD. I can remember supporting his application for my HOD position. We had many good times together and with other members of staff and their families. Jill and my sympathies to Sue and family. Peter and Jill Maslin,

Dear Baldwin Family
My deepest condolences for your loss. Like thousands of boys Mr Baldwin was my principal for my time at Boys High School. I believe having Mr Baldwin leading our school with his morals and ethics was a major contributing factor to the thriving success of boys high. Along with many other boys Mr Baldwin´s influence on our teenage years, has set us up with life skills and morals that we will use in our day to day lives. A fond memory I have of Mr Baldwin is after hostel lunch some days he loaded-up a load of boys on the back of his truck and gave us a lift back to school. Rest in peace Mr Baldwin.

There really are no words, Sue: Ian's passing leaves a uniquely Ian-shaped hole in the Baldwin whanau - a larger than life one at that. His impact on people was powerful - always driven by genuine concern and tempered by a moderately wicked sense of humour. One of life's good buggers indeed.
You and your family will be in the hearts of many; take care. Kia kaha.
Love and condolences from our family to yours.
