Yesterday

We were saddened to read the loss of Heather, wife, Mother, Mother in law, grandmother, sister & friend. We remember fondly of her back in Winton days at the Winton Presbyterian Church. She was such a kind gentle woman. Our thoughts are with you her family at this time.

Special friends are treasures. Heather was one of mine. Finding each other in Winton, last century, was one of the best things that happened to me.

Heather was a wonderful unpretentious person who knew how to live and enjoy life. Her faith made her strong, kind and happy.
She looked forward, made plans, drove and walked places, made paintings from lovely photos, dried flowers and made cards, had fresh veggies in her garden summer and winter and kept in touch via letters, phonecalls and visits.

She made good friends with those who shared experiences with her; people at her church, the girls in her NZ representative hockey team, the walking group, neighbours
and as the tea lady at Central Southland College she was a valued staff member.

Most recently, we met Johanna from Austria. Johanna shared our bunk room when we were in Te Anau last year and became another friend to keep in touch with.
Johanna is travelling from Germany to Austria today, to be with her mum to light a candle for Heather.

Heather and I enjoyed exploring. With her trusty camera Heather recorded life as it happened. We visited some interesting places in France, and Switzerland. I´ll always be annoyed that we didn´t get to Stewart Island together but we conquered the Dusky Track with Richard, Judith and Janet. We visited Central Otago and Te Anau, popped in to Winton to see folk and most recently we explored the Wairarapa. On this trip the fire alarm went off and we evacuated ourselves in our pyjamas at 6am from our hotel out on to the Main Street of Greytown, to watch the fire engine arrive and wait until inspectors decided it was safe to go back inside. No photo of that one!!

Heather was always happy to share news of her busy, active family. She was quietly proud of her siblings and her children and their families. There were weddings, university graduations, overseas trips, and grandchildren. Her book Myriads of Memories is a wonderful family history . And then, surprise: another chapter, too late for the book, in the form of another husband. I know how much Ken appreciated his new life with her and I was amazed at the activities and trips they fitted into the life they made together. Sadly that chapter was a little shorter than what they had hoped for.

It´s good to have shared so much with such a great little lady. She'll be enjoying her next chapter and new journey.
I miss her already and like so many others, I´ll always treasure the friendship I had with her.
