It is with a heavy heart that I read of this some years later. Our family doctors spanning 4 generations and family friend for 35 plus years. He was a special human being who found something in common with everyone he met. The Fox family will never forget you.

I got to know Dr. Anton when I moved to New Zealand in Invercargill 2001. You were more than my GP, friend, and elder. It is harder to find a selfless and generous human being like you with the qualities of every possible humanity in one life. Very few people have influenced my life the way you did and thank you for being there for me. Dr. Anton. your death has left an irreplaceable void in my heart. I hope you are in a better place now. Rest in peace.

Excellent doctor and good friend whose persistence likely saved my kidneys, if not my life. I will miss our philosophical debates.

I met Anton when he first arrived in New Zealand in 1970 through Weightlifting (he was known as Tony to me). We became good friends and after I shifted to Bluff he frequently visited to train with me in the Gym I built in my garage. He had a love for cars, particularly Rovers in those days, and speed (but gave me the absolute horrors on the Waihola Straight). I subsequently shifted north and occasionally saw him at major events but in time lost contact with him. He was a terrific guy and made a huge impact on Southland through his profession and his strong interest in Weightlifting. I am extremely sad to hear of his passing and wish to extend my condolences to his family.

Very sorry to hear of Anton's passing, he was a friend, neighbour and doctor of our family for many many years. He took such good care of my Dad in his last few years of life while we lived in Conway Cresent, the hunting trips and then looking after my kids as their GP when they were younger, a great friend to my Aunty May. Anton loved his home made jerseys from her, fond memories, take care and rest in peace Anton

Very sad to hear of Anton's accident and death. He loved driving his cars.
I knew Anton as a doctor, when he first arrived at Kew Hospital. He was a flatmate for some years and a good friend. His memory will live on , as my son , Anton, was named after him . He will be welcome in heaven.

Deepest Sympathy to Anton's family and friends. Dr De Croos was a very big part of our lives in the 1970's when Dad was terminally ill. Always went above and beyond clinic hours and was a regular "pop in visitor" on his way home. You left an imprint in my life that will remain with me forever. Rest in Peace Doctor De Croos.

Oh my god. Not Anton. I have known this kind and helpful person since I was 13..... I heard about the accident but not Anton.
He was my coach and mentor when I first set foot at the Invercargill YMCA on a cold winter night back in 1974. My first grip on a rusty 40lb bar and under the guise of this great figure, I was a weight-lifter for life.
His love of driving and fast cars was aparant when we travelled to many competitions over the South Island together. With each champs we went to a new technique of lifting was tested out, with sometimes surprising results; followed by references to the early Egyptian lifters.
During my teenage years, and to this day, I still cannot fathom how Anton could manage a dead lift of 205kg while only weighing less than 60kg.
His dedication to his profession and the love of his sport will live on in us all. He has left his legacy in our memories. I feel so sad, and I will truly miss him.
I hope there's a good gym up there Anton to practice some new techniques.

Rest in peace
Your good friend and early protege

Andy

Was very saddened to hear about Anton, he was our family doctor until he stopped practicing. He was the best doctor we've ever had, always running well behind time, but I never minded as I knew why - he was so thorough, and took the time to know everyone, never rushing. The world has lost one of the great ones xx

I knew Anton as a lovely man and inspirational weight lifting coach. It is a story from my English born mother-in-law that touched me most. Having married into a Catholic family and having two children in quick succession, she was keenly aware that another pregnancy would prevent her ever travelling back to her home, Dr De Croos diagnosed severe homesickness and prescribed the oral contraceptive pill at a time when many doctors were refusing to prescribe. She forever spoke of his kindness and compassion.
