Fred was my late mother's (Elsie Wilson) cousin. He was also my optician in Napier 42 years ago. He was kind enough to explain to me, In layman's terms, how my eye sight problems began. RIP Fred.

Sending heartfelt thoughts and hugs to you and the family Leigh, and work associates....
We had a long association with Fred going back to the days when he stayed at the Vista in Wairoa with us. Then following through with exceptional service to our family members ever since. We have enjoyed many wonderful conversations - always with an interesting and funny conclusion. Fred has certainly left this world having contributed enormously and positively impacting so many people.
RIP

Fred .. loved the man that embraced each day. over the conversations we have had over these past decades it's obvious that family and friends were your love and passion. Many gained from your exceptional business and involvement in the community. For myself, i only have wonderful memories of a man who could bring humor to any situation .. including his own battles with life .. always modest of his successes and giving of himself. Leigh and family .. there aren't words that can be said that now that will fill the void of your loss but know, there are many phenomenal memories that will be shared by yourselves and many such as myself where, when we talked to Fred, the world was a much better place to be in.

When I was 14 years old Fred told me I needed to wear glasses in the little room at Bob Bryant's chemist, Waipawa. That was 40 + years ago and when in Hawke's Bay over the intervening years I saw him for my eye care and great specs. We always had wide reaching conversations about travel and life in all it's aspects; I was treated with professional care and know he did the same for others of my family. He's already sorely missed. Sincere condolences Leigh and family, Catherine Pedersen

Condolences to the family. I'm so saddened to read of Mr Swain's death. I nursed him during a few admissions, and we developed a great rapport. It all started when he commented on my glasses! We shared the same disease and had lots of discussions about it. RIP dear Mr Swain.
