Deepest condolesences to all Fred's family. How lucky you have been to have had Fred in your lives for so long. Listening to the livestream there were many similarities to my dad Fred Inder, who also had a love of Te Anau and Fiordland. For many years my parents first crib was next door to your Freds in Mokonui Street and the two Freds, with so much in common, had many yarns over the fence. Lets hope they catch up in Heaven and continue the fishing stories.

Fred. What can I say? You welcomed me into your home and family. Lots of fabulous holidays in Te Anau with Karen .You never gave up on pulling the boat until I got up water skiing . Your unfailing patience even when my hands froze to the rope. Such beautiful memories of hot summer days, endless water-skiing, parties at the black crib and picnics on the other side of the lake. Catch up with my dad up there and enjoy some memories of combat years. With great affection and respect. I will be there to see you off.

Eastern Southland Hunt

September 13, 2023

Vale Fred Cooper.
Fred was the oldest member of the Eastern Southland Hunt. He was a member from probably the late 1930s . The earliest references to him riding are after the war in 1946/48.
Fred had always said his wife rode at the first Hunts held.
The horses hunted in those early years included Hero, Clinker and Melody. He also served as a Whipper in.
Fred rode at Point to Points. His horse Clinker won twice in 1953 at Mandeville (ESH) and Wyndham (Mokoreta Branch). The conditions of these races included a 13 stone (82.5 kg) min wgt. I think Fred would have to have had a BIG saddle.
From 1958 - 60 he was President. These were the years setting up the Hunt farm at McNab and building a new house. It is this generation of hunting forefathers who Eastern Southland can thank for it´s fortunate financial position. Much has been done to expand on this capital fecundity but this was the foundation it was built from.
He was President again in 1975 - 77. In all those years up to his resignation in 1982 he was also treasurer.
In 1983 Fred was made a Life Member of the Eastern Southland Hunt.
Fred had been a tireless worker over many years and references to his considerable contribution to the solid asset position of the Hunt were made in his citation.
Fred never lost interest in the Hunt and always liked to know how the finances were looking.
He attended the 75th celebrations in 2009.
The Eastern Southland remembers. Vale Fred.
