Ewing saved my life,Somewhere in the 80`s,I was suffering from a mental illness caused by lead poisoning,my life felt shattered and I rang him on the talkback show to tell him I felt like ending my life.He asked me what I was going to do about it,I replied that I was going to jump off the Auckland Harbour bridge and end it all.
He then said,"Well could you please ring me and the listeners back tomorrow night and let us know how it went?'
I replied,OK,then hung up,I thumped my hand on my table in frustration and thought how could I ring back if I was dead.
I rang him back the next night and he recognised my voice straight away and said"Good morning my little lamb, welcome back to the fold,so you have thought about it and made the right decision"
From that moment on he became my ever hero,I have had a good life since and have wonderful children supporting me in my old age,I am now 83 years young,in pretty good shape.
I am not too computer literate and have tried a few times to contact him to thank him for what he has done for me,but just failed by a few months, now that I have learned of his passing. My younger brother spent some time in the sanitorium at Waipiata due to illnesses in his childhood, they advised this for the clean purity of the air in central otago as Ewing stated.I was born in Dunedin surrounded by Irish Catholic relatives, but, like Ewing,I have always questioned everything religious.I just live by the principles of the ten commandments which I feel is the right set of rules.
Vale Ewing,my loved brother, and thank you.
Paul.

I am so sad to read that Ewing has passed away. We were the same age and the last time I saw him was when I was over from Australia and staying for a few days. He came back after doing his night shift and brought me eggs on toast for breakfast. . I am sure you remember me as we shared so much of our lives when I lived in NZ with Cy. Lorraine x x x x x

I was so very sad to hear of Ewing's death. My memory of Rev. Ewing Stevens was back when he was the Minister with the Wakari Church in Dunedin. During the early 1970's my mother was diagnosed with cancer and I will always remember the kindness shown by Ewing during this difficult time. He also conducted my mothers funeral and over the year's I have thought of him often. For most of my married life I have lived in Alexandra and when I heard Ewing was living in the area I thought, on many occasions, how I would have loved to meet up with him again and re-introduce myself. I was only a teenager when my Mum died and I just wanted to thank him for his kindness shown during that time. He will be remembered by many with the utmost respect. Rest in Peace, Ewing, what a great life and man you were. With deepest sympathy to your family.

Dear Ewing, what an amazing life you lived. You officiated at our wedding in 1974 when Knox Church in Dunedin had just installed the new organ. We will always remember your signals to our photographer, when to take photos inside the church (due to the church not allowing photos to be taken inside the church) and the fantastic service you gave us. You were a great colleague and friend from our 4XO days. Rest in peace dear Ewing. Sincere sympathy to family and friends.

I listened to Ewing's night time talk back radio show in the 1990's. He was such a comfort and joy with his "Don't Worry Be Happy" tune, quizzes, extensive knowledge, gentleness and kindness.
He was a rock of support. Thank you Ewing for everything, you were so loved by all your listeners.
Sending love to your family

Have never forgotten Ewing when we lived in Centennial Ave Dunedin in 1970s. He was a very caring fun minister at the church and asked to use our baby son as Jesus when children put on Christmas service. Have always followed news on where he was when we left Dunedin. He will be greatly missed by many. My sympathy extended to all his family members.
