To all the Anderson family
We have wonderful memories of when we were neighbours in Grey Street. We always enjoyed Joes company and his dry sense of humour We had many happy nights together and heaps of laughs. Happy memories.

My sincere condolences to the Anderson family for their loss. Joe was a great and highly respected man who served his country well in so many ways. While in Invercargill in the early 1980s I appeared before Joe regularly as a police prosecutor over a six month period. I am forever grateful to him for his guidance and understanding while settling into that role. I formed total respect for him and he remains one of the finest people I have known.

As a young novice lawyer in the 1980s appearing before Judge Anderson was a baptism of fire until I learned how deeply he was respected. Joe ran a tight ship, yet was fair and listened with humanity about the sad situations people were in.
Off the bench Joe was humorous and a very interesting man to talk with. He helped many lawyers find their feet and will be fondly remembered.
Condolences to Lee and her family.

When I first cut my teeth as a young wet behind the ears lawyer in the Invercargill District Court back in the distant 1980´s I was inundated with horror stories about appearing before the fearsome Judge Anderson.
In an endeavour to quell my apprehension my supervising Partner advised " the hardest steel emerges from the hottest flames ". A mantra I repeated often.
Joe was hard but fair. He did not suffer fools but always gave positive recognition when deserved. Off the bench he was invariably a gentleman.
One of the old school.... in the best of ways.
My sincere condolences to Lee and family.

My deepest sympathy to you, Lee, and your family at Judge Anderson's passing.
I knew Joe well when I practised as a lawyer and later when I was a judge in Invercargill for over 6 years, by which time, of course, he was thoroughly retired.
My wife and i enjoyed having afternoon tea at your lovely home in Grey Street and I enjoyed my various catch-ups with you both on other occasions.
Joe was still firm in his views but also compassionate about the less fortunate members of society. He cared for his family and his friends. He will be missed by you and all who knew him well.
I am sorry that I will not be able to be present at his farewell.
