Velva Whitlow Obituary

Velva Ann (Campbell) Whitlow July 29, 1935 – February 1, 2025
Velva Ann was born in Springfield, Missouri (1935) to Carl and Wilda (Meese) Campbell. A loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, teacher, friend, she leaves a legacy of kindness, laughter, loyalty, compassion and empathy for every life she touched. Her most endearing qualities were the stories she told, which always contained a touch of humor, and her gift of making you laugh with her renditions of tall tale jokes. Velva's life was a blessing; the memories she left us with, our treasure. She was unconditionally loved and will be missed beyond measure. Our greatest tribute is not grief but gratitude for being able to share her life.
Velva attended Central High School before beginning the teacher education program at Southwest Missouri State College. She went on to teach for 30 years in Carthage and Republic, making a difference in the lives of hundreds of students. They affectionately called her "Mother Whitlow" and showered her with beads and frogs, her trademark collection items.
She met her soul mate, Charlie, at the Bills Drive-In where she was employed, and they shared 63 years of faithful love and devotion. Both felt blessed when two children, Christy and Clayton, joined their union and became the source of their greatest joys.
Being a grandmother to Ashley and Racheal and great-grandmother to Maple, Hayden and Oliver was her favorite role. She spoiled them relentlessly, never failing to instill in them long-standing family traditions. She relished and shared their accomplishments. They were her pride and joy.
Virgil and Janice Lampton were Velva and Charlie's best friends. Their families shared travels and family celebrations. The foursome supported each other through the joys and trials of life. What first were teacher colleagues (Phyllis, Jeanie, Lisa, Pat, Ann, Rhonda) quickly changed to being her extended family.
Velva was preceded in death by her loving husband Charles Oliver, brother (Charles Allen) and cherished daughter Twyanna Christine Jordan.
Survivors are her son Henry Clayton whom she always referred to as her baby boy and loved beyond words, her granddaughters Ashley (Jeremy) Flores and great-granddaughter Maple, Rachael (Brian) Simpson and great-grandsons Hayden and Oliver. She also leaves her treasured and devoted sisters Rosella Fowler and Flossie Kincannon, a plethora of family members, and a host of lifelong friends.

I was 5 years old when I met Mother Velva... I'm 53 now. She was a constant warmth in my life as a teacher's daughter, across the hall from my mother Jeanie Laney Kendrick for decades. Every week and every year, her laughter and love was felt by all those around her. She lived and loved a FULL LIFE surrounded by the PEACE AND GRACE she lived by from her heart and spirit.

I wish I would have known earlier about Mrs. Whitlow´s passing, so I could´ve attended her service. Condolences & prayers are sent to her family & friends. She was one of my favorite & most treasured teachers. I will never forget her beautiful smile & wonderful hugs! It was cool being privileged enough to spend my recesses grading papers & being allowed to take hard candy from the special bowl in her cabinet. I remember her having the most beautiful handwriting too. She was loved by everyone she knew & met. Heaven certainly gained another angel through this very special & wonderful lady.

It saddens me I will be unable to attend her memorial. Velva enriched each life she touched-and there were so many. I am thankful for the years I was privileged to teach near her, watching her create a joyous classroom, and enjoy her stories (which I repeated two of very recently)! Anything Velva brought delight! Heaven grew even more joyous this week!
