Bernie, for the 45 years or thereabouts since you and I came together in the band I was trying to get off the ground in Dunedin I have been proud to call you my best friend.
We laughed together, we cried together, often at the same time.
From the adventures in the VW (move down the back of the bus please) to going round the block together when Flay became Lodestone, I have nothing but great memories.
I leaned on you when Kerry broke my heart.
I attended your wedding when you married Hilary. You never did get the photos - sorry Bern. Hils, I'll try to make amends for that.
After I left Dunedin you and Hils always welcomed me with a place to stay when I visited.
We saw less of each other as years went by but I often spoke of you. You were often in my thoughts and always in my heart, and when we did get together we simply picked up where we left off.
My last visit to NZ in 2013 now means so much more to me. Dinner with you and Hils and the girls at your place in Wanaka, pizza in Dunedin, and most of all our last play together at the Musos' Club. Who cares what it sounded like. We were great! And, sadly, what has now become our farewell drink on Friday evening at the Craft Bar in the Octagon.
Bernie, you'll finally get to share that big stage with Rory Gallagher, and if you should look down on me next time I' m having a drink, listen out for a message from shipping!

Hilary, Clem, Sophie & Kate,
So sad. My thoughts are with you all.

My thoughts are with you, Hilary and family. Bernie was an incredibly special guy.
A passionate musso and a friend to all. In over thirty years that I knew Bernie I never heard him say an ill word about anyone.
He will be very sorely missed, and will be a Star in Rock and Roll Heaven.

Dear Hilary, So sorry to hear of Burnies passing. Have many fond and hilarious memories - especially a Regent Theatre gig with Biggles. I shall forward some pics asap. I was very lucky to have caught up with Burnie in the last ten years while performing with Argus and everytime Burn was in great spirits. It was an honour to have known & worked in music with him. Love to you & all your family & his friends Chris Davies & Mego.XX

Dear Hilary Clem, Sophie, Kate and your extended family. Gary and I are so very sad to hear about Bernie. Even though we have only known him for a few short years as our holiday neighbour we have loved every minute of our catch ups over the fence, in the old crib, the new house and often over a drink or two. A wonderful husband father and grandfather, musical encyclopedia, always happy to share a smile and a good yarn.
Love to you all Marilyn & Gary Still

Sorry to hear of Bernie's sudden passing. My thoughts with Hillary, Clem, Sophie, Katie and extended family, friends and colleagues. Bernie gave me a chance at Hamburg sud (Columbus Line) in 1995, and for that I am thankful. The greatest learning curve I have had, and it set the foundation of my career. He would make an effort to catch up for a beer when I was in Sydney working for the competion, it was people who mattered to Bernie, and he will always have my respect. You will be missed Bernie.

Bernie be came a part of my life 1970 or 1971. He auditioned for bass player to Sunday's Problem, and worked with us for a year or so till he decided to move on to other bands. He was replaced by Jane Faulkner, who later became my wife. Jane's sister Hilary attended a couple of band practises as the change over between the two bass players took place. I then spent a year or so flaying with Bernie at 19 Hawthorne Ave in Dunedin. For 40 odd years I have considered him my friend, through many ups and downs.
Bernie, Winthropshire will miss Carstairs, and the silly handshakes, and the lager bar at the city. Thanks for loaning me your VW on a winters day with icy roads and snow falling. it was all good till I did unintentional 360's in Cannon Gate on the ice!
Rest in peace mate
