Bernadette EAST Obituary

Greetings David and family. Our sincere condolences on the recent passing of Bernadette. We were saddened to hear the news. Our Timaru days are very firmly entrenched in our memories and Bernadette featured in those happy times. Our thoughts and prayers at with you all.

So many happy Pareora memories of babies and children, barbecues, parties and dress ups to the sound track of Come On Eileen and many more and there you were- right in the middle, eyes flashing laughing and loving all of it. Here's to you Bernadette and the wonderful contribution you made and the many people you connected with throughout your life. David, Kylie, Matthew, Janna and families our thoughts are with you. To David and the East and Welsh families, we are sorry that we can't be with you to today to celebrate a life well lived. We have fond memories that stretch back 60 years of a lovely cousin who was full of joy and compassion.

David, Kylie, Matt, Janna and families, words cannot express how sorry we are you have lost such a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Bernadette was a lovely lady and we will always remember her infectious laugh and her readiness to "debate" ("I grew up with brothers"!). We have enjoyed the times we have spent together with you, David, and Bernadette and think of you as good friends rather than "in-laws". Sorry for your great loss , of a wonderfull loyal wife and a great mother and grandmother ... I have known Bernadette in many capacities over the last 30 years ..a very respected , dedicated and graceful lady indeed , in health and in sickness ..I can imagine the amount of grief your heavy hearts are burdened with .. but a couple of things may be a source of comfort :
Bernadette was a woman of great faith , when we talked few days ago , she
was at complete peace with herself , knowing where she is heading and moving on .
I can imagine her sipping her coffee mug up there , catching up on heavenly gossip ...! Bossing them around there , trying to run the place !!!

I nursed with Bernadette 1976 @TPH OT, & after a few years we started @ Bidwill Hospital.
During all the years as a True Friend ~ Bernadette was my "Top Friend" ~ I will miss Bernadette terribly. I loved her so much.

My deepest sympathy on the loss of a very beautiful lady.

Fond memories of a nursing colleague who will be hugely missed at our NZPSHA meetings. Her passion for nursing was evident in all she did and will continue to inspire us in the future. I will miss her smile, her sense of humour, her kindness and her friendship. A great loss to us all.

Bernadette was the much loved wife of my second cousin David, but I've always thought of her as an aunty. I've held her in my heart since I was a child and got to know her and my third cousin, her daughter Janna at a family reunion. In 2020 my partner and I were passing through Timaru on the way from Dunedin to Runanga. I felt totally cheeky asking if we could stay with her and David, but I'm so glad I did. We had a really good catch up, and talked well into the night, even though dinner had been ready on the stove for hours! She could talk! She was a completely enchanting, commanding person and the world is much worse without her. I just take heart in knowing that wherever she is, she's completely pain-free, and she's definitely running the place. So much love to David, Janna, Kylie and the rest of the family. This is a huge loss and I wish I could take it all away for all of you.

This shadow of death is temporary. The sting of death triggers our recall of memories and moments, delight and joy. And it is these positive moments that highlight the beauty of Bernadette, the true essence of who she was. This is what I will personally will carry with me into my future.
May our Lord Jesus give you comfort and reassurance.
May His presence strengthen you and carry you forward in this journey called 'life'.
