GREENHALGH,
William James Harry (Bill)
They say when an old man dies, a Library burns to the ground. William James Harry (Bill) Greenhalgh passed from this life into the next October 22, 2023 at the age of 92 years, leaving behind his wife and love of a lifetime Ann (nee Dickens) and four children: Lawrence William Greenhalgh (Louise), Jennifer Ann van Akker (Timothy), Peter John Greenhalgh, and Barbara Leanne Quaale-Greenhalgh (Andrew Litzenberger) as well as nine living grandchildren (Isaiah Mark van Akker, deceased), and eleven great grandchildren.
He was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on January 10, 1931 to William Greenhalgh (Sr.) and Amelia (nee Bumbee)and moved to Saanichton at the age of 3 with his father to Uncle Jim's Loganberry farm. His mother and his older sister Gladys (Delbrouck/Otto) joined them later and together they established a legacy of practicality, simple joys, and love of family. Dad loved gardening and learned his skills helping his father tend the gardens at Lord Colville's, a place that gave him memories of Christmas feasts, bagpipes, and Scottish dancing that he carried his entire life. From Boy, his first dog, through to Tessa, his last, all animals knew they had landed on their feet coming into Dad's care. After trying his hand at several things, he joined the housekeeping staff at the Queen Alexander Hospital (The Solarium) and remained there 35 years. It was not easy work, but his diligence and compassion made him dear to the children and staff there. He and Mum were married May 16, 1959 and parted in this life still sharing kisses. The life lessons, memories, and love he left behind could fill several libraries and will be carried by each of us now in the libraries of our hearts.
