Maureen Rae (Marnie) Butler (née Berger) died October 10, 2023, Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria B.C. Born May 19, 1950 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Victoria, B.C. Marnie was predeceased by her parents Willard (Bill) Albert Clarence Berger and Florence (Lil) Lillian (née Perry). Mother of Sarah (Ben Bartram) and life partner of Patrick Jamieson.

A unique individual, trained as an arts administrator, Marnie served for 12 years as the editor of Island Catholic News (1993-2005), the progressive Catholic monthly, until ill health intervened. Afflicted with osteoporosis, Marnie spent her last 15 years very reflectively including becoming a member of Congregation Emanu-El synagogue.
Many thanks to the all the nurses and doctors at the Jubilee 4th Floor South and Hospice for their wonderful compassion and care.
Marnie was interred at Hatley Memorial Gardens on October 14th, 2023. A Celebration of Life will be held in April 2024. To honour her life, donations may be made to Island Catholic News.

Belated message for dear Marnie. Marnie and I came together in the early 1970´s. We shared mutual friends and many times had dinner together or attempted to resolve issues of the day. She was a woman of intellectual depth and held her own in discussions. But above all else she was a warm, loving and compassionate woman. Over the years we lost contact but our time together was special.

Met Marnie when we both worked at Cool-Aid in the early 70´s & had a great time with the "crew." Hadn´t seen her for years but always remember those fun days. Our condolences to her friends & family.

I am so sorry to hear of Marnie´s passing. We were friends in high school and stayed friends whose lives intertwined throughout the years. We were young mums together and she was with me during the birth of my second child. She was a thoughtful, creative and loving person and I valued our life friendship. I am sorry we lost touch in these later years, I always thought we would see each other again. Much love to her loved ones. May her memory be for a blessing. Barukh Dayan HaEmet
