RICHARD HILL Obituary

It is with gratitude that we celebrate the full life of Richard Hill and it is with sadness that we announce his passing on Friday, November 10, 2023 with his beloved wife, Doris and youngest daughter, Sheryl by his side. Richard or "Dick" as he was commonly known was born on July 14,1934 in Fort William, Ontario to Olga & Armas Hill. As the oldest son of 19 siblings, he was the true patriarch of Caroline St. supporting many of his brothers & sisters throughout his lifetime. Following graduation from FWCI, he built a successful career at the LCBO where he worked for 35 years and retired as District Manager of the LCBO Warehouse in 1993. Dad's legacy will be that of a community builder. He was a committed and dedicated volunteer for many organizations where he shared his talents, skills and sharp intellect. In 1995, he was awarded the Ontario Medal of Citizenship in recognition of his contributions of which his family was immensely proud. His true passion was sports, specifically baseball and he was a dedicated sports volunteer and fan for decades - umpire, referee and District Administrator for Little League Baseball for 30 years. In 2018, Dad's crowning achievement came with his induction into the NWO Sports Hall of Fame where he served on the Executive for many years and led the move to its current location. Dad will be missed by his wife of 62 years, Doris and his children Suzanne (Graham Brooks), Darren (Penny) and Sheryl (Dave Veltri) and his grandchildren Kennedy Brooks and Everett Hill - as well as by his siblings: Robert, Raymond, Rodney, Diane (Jack Connelly), Edward (Colleen), Janet (Joe Parker), Brian (Francis), Billy, Hope (Buzz Johnston) and David (Janet) including many nieces & nephews. We thank the Sandpiper Team at Southbridge Pinewood for Dad's exceptional care and compassion this past year and the Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Centre including Drs. Del Paggio and Hagerty. A special thank-you to his sister, Diane who was always there and to his favourite sister-in-law, Agnes Teskey with whom he shared a special bond. Our deepest gratitude goes to our youngest sister, Sheryl, whose devoted support and care for our father was loving testament to their relationship. A parishioner at St. Agnes Church for over 50 years & as a man of unwavering faith, a funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 12:10 pm in St. Agnes R.C. Church, celebrated by Rev. James Panikulam. A private interment will take place St. Andrew's Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Blake Funeral Chapel, 200 May Street S., with Vigil Prayers beginning at 7:00 pm. In recognition of Richard's commitment to his community & in lieu of flowers, the family would gratefully appreciate donations to the Northern Cancer Fund or NWO Sports Hall of Fame.

Dad, you were a beacon of integrity, fairness and respect - and you were loved.

So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. I spent many a summer scorekeeping with Brian (Nicholls) who was Dick's ADA for Little League.
Nothing was more fun than watching them stress together:)
As a kid nothing could beat Dick's yelling STRIKE when I watched him umpire. You knew when he was umping behind the plate!
I also had many a conversation with Dick in the early morning hours while he was in the coffee shop working on his puzzles. Your family should be so proud of what a kind, generous and thoughtful man Dick was.

Where to start? I first met Dick when he was umpiring in the Ladies Fastball League. He took no guff and was usually right in his calls, even if we didn't always agree. Then I started at Fort Ignition and Dick was at the LCBO. we always enjoyed it when he came in to get a part or some free advice. I also used to see him at the Ortona legion at lunchtime. He was always happy and passed it on to all around him. We use to think he made up his wife as we never saw her, but knew she was the love of his life. I will sure miss Dick as he was a memorable character.
