Russell was a very respected authority on Southland Rocks and Minerals and helped our family with guidance and advice, a foundation for a life long involvement in lapidary work for my late parents, Doug and Iris Leith.
I greatly respected his knowledge but moved away from Southland so was not aware of his wider activities. I extend my condolences to Mrs Beck and their family.

In the early 1980s I was undertaking research for my masters dissertation (at Bradford University in the U.K.) on New Zealand greenstone. I was lucky enough to be able to visit New Zealand and when in Invercargill I met Russell and I remember warmly his kindness and generous support for my work. That project and that visit to New Zealand had a huge impact on my life and on my career as an archaeologist. I will always be grateful to Russell for the welcome and support he gave to an odd student who turned up briefly from the other side of the world.

Russell was a greatly respected museum colleague and friend. I had hoped to see him when I visit Invercargill next month. It's sad for me that this won't happen. My sympathies to Ann and the family.

A sorely missed jade entity of worldwide knowledge and inspiration for decades. So much gifted from a truly humble, gentle man ,rarely encountered in life's experience.
A void remaining of abys proportions impossible to fill.
With much-saddened emotions for this loss to all.

Remember Russell as a kid at school and at our Standard 4 reunion in ChCh when we were all 70. He made a beautiful stainless steel seal as a gift for our teacher. Very talented fellow...kind and generous.
